Tinnitus, or noises for which there is no external cause, is a very common condition – in fact, almost as common as hearing loss itself. Although almost everyone experiences tinnitus at some time (for instance, after attending a noisy music event), about two thirds of people with significant hearing loss also experience tinnitus on a more frequent basis.
At present there are no cures for tinnitus (in the great majority of cases) but the good news is that you are not alone in experiencing it. In nearly every case, it is the result of a minor malfunction of the hearing system and not the symptom of a serious underlying condition.
