An open fitting earpiece is an alternative to a custom earmould, in order to hold the hearing aid in place in the ear. However, it is only suitable if you have a mild to moderate hearing loss, otherwise the hearing aid will not be powerful enough for you. Because open fittings do not require an impression to be taken of the ear, you may be able to start using your hearings straight away. The tube that conveys the sound to the ear is thinner, and there is less material touching the ear than with traditional earmoulds, so they are cosmetically attractive and many people find that they are more comfortable and lighter to wear. They also allow the ear to ‘breathe’ more easily, and the hearing aids are less likely to sound echoey.
